Spooky Season Is Here: Have Some Fun.
October has a sneaky way of showing up. One day you’re
grilling in shorts, the next you’re layering sweaters, washing twice as much
laundry, and wondering when daylight disappeared. Two big October milestones:
Columbus Day (you might get the day off) and Halloween (you definitely
get candy).
I’ve reached way into adulthood so I’m far from trick or treating age, but it’s great hearing the doorbell ring, seeing the kids with their bags open, driving around and seeing the imagination some put into decorating their homes. Webs in trees, Skeletons coming up from under the ground, people really having fun with it. That’s a key thing, “having fun”.
In this world of screens, (yes, parents, you too, your kids learn from the best), Halloween makes people get together and actually talk! Discussions on how the kids will or want to dress up, yourself, or all of you, it’s about creativity and fun. Planning a party, deciding on costumes, decorating the house, it gives us a reason to be together and communicate, and that’s the best reason for celebrating a holiday that fundamentally has no meaning. And it’s not just THE NIGHT together, the time spent together goes on for weeks before.
There are a lot of reasons we “celebrate” Halloween, (I searched it). Sure, the origins are spooky—ancient Celts, bonfires, spirits crossing into our world—but somewhere along the way, it became less about warding off ghosts and more about creating memories. Photos of those homemade costumes? Priceless. Even if you wonder why you thought green face paint was a good idea when that photo goes viral…
And really, that’s the point—Halloween gives us a reason to play. To carve pumpkins, enjoy kids parading through the neighborhood all dressed up, and seeing their faces light up when someone hands them a full-size candy bar. The holiday doesn’t have a “meaning” in the traditional sense—but maybe “having fun together” is the meaning.
Pop culture always shapes Halloween so for 2025 think superheroes, live and animated movie and streaming stars and villains, and classic characters with a fresh twist. Halloween costumes aren’t just outfits, they’re expressions. For couples, matching looks like famous duos or themed pairings are cool. (Taylor and Travis anyone??)... Families can join the fun with group costumes that make every photo more Instagram-worthy. And if you’re going solo, you can never go wrong putting your own spin on the classic witches, vampires and pirates. Let’s face it, if you’re only going have a crazy dress up party one time a year, you need to put some thought into it. If you blow it, it’ll be a year until you can come back from it.
Halloween is like Thanksgiving without the calories or
awkward table talk. It’s just about being together. So, make it count. Dress up, laugh loud, eat candy, and take pictures—you’ll be glad you did. Under the
autumn moon, we’re all just kids in costumes again.
