∞ 5 REASONS YOU SHOULD HAVE INDOOR PLANTS ∞ (Yes, YouTube
Made Me Say That)
For openers, I have to confess: this headline is exactly
what they told me to do on YouTube. Evidently, you’re more likely to read this
blog if I shout “5 REASONS YOU SHOULD…” instead of simply suggesting you think
about indoor plants. I apologize. I also feel better having gotten that off my
chest.
Now that the weather is cooling, outdoor cleanup is wrapping up, and those of us in the cooler and colder regions are retreating indoors, it’s the perfect time to shift to the simplified version of gardening—bringing the green inside. There’s still something deeply satisfying about getting your hands in the soil, tending to living things, and enjoying the reward of what grows. Cold weather doesn’t mean you have to lose that feel-good connection. Indoor gardening gives you color, texture, flowers, and even edible plants—herbs, microgreens, and real food grown right from your own dirt. (That's a whole separate blog, and yes, it’s now on the list.)
Indoor plants give you function and reward. You check them throughout the day, dust their leaves when needed, feed them on a schedule, water them, cut off already flowered flowers and leaves that are done. You even occasionally catch yourself smiling when you look at them, or even talking to them. (If you do, I suggest whispering. Quietly. Inside you. Trust me.)
And perhaps the biggest perk? No weeds. Seriously. None.
It’s spectacular.
The color of these Philodendron leaves are amazing
For apartment dwellers or those who already keep plants year-round, keep reading anyway. The fact that you’ve made it this far means you’re invested. I’m a year-round plant person myself, and I learned a few things I didn’t know.
I checked with Google AI - because that’s what we do now - and it
told me that indoor plants “reduce stress, improve mood, boost cognitive
function, and provide a sense of accomplishment.” There’s an actual term for
this - horticultural therapy. “It helps lower cortisol levels, improves
emotional regulation, and promotes mindfulness by giving you a daily connection
to nature”. It keeps you rooted (pun intended) in the present.
Indoor plants have always been part of my home. They’re pretty, they warm a space, and they say something about the people who live there. Some folks look at family pictures when visiting someone’s home. I look at the plants. 😁
What I never knew before I did research for this Blog is that many houseplants
actually purify the air. They remove common household toxins like formaldehyde,
benzene, and carbon monoxide—things I didn’t even realize were common household
toxins. Anybody know that? Something new to worry about, I guess.
The best part is that houseplants are low maintenance, whether you
have nothing but time or barely any at all. They give far more than they take.
Many even release calming natural fragrances that relax your mood.
Alright, you were promised 5 Reasons You Should Have
Indoor Plants, so here they are:
- Improved
mood: Caring for plants boosts dopamine—a natural brain lift.
- Enhanced
concentration and cognition: Plants improve focus, attention, and
creativity.
- A
relationship with something that needs you: They give you
responsibility and reward you back. Kind of like a pet—only quieter.
- Reduced
stress and anxiety: Interaction with plants lowers cortisol and even
helps reduce blood pressure.
- Mindful
interaction: Plant care stimulates your senses, inspires meaningful
thoughts, and keeps your brain active.
Not to be forgotten, indoor plants can bring friends and
families together. Sharing tips, secrets, and even cuttings creates a reason for connection—and a little pride in the greenery you’ve nurtured. I'm all in in anything that brings family and friends together.
